Digesting yourself from the inside out

One of the most interesting things I learnt in 3rd year bichemistry at university was that every day you digest approximately 1/2 pound (250 grams) of your own intestinal tract lining.

Given that a tiny ulcer or split in the lining of the stomach can be fatal, this is a truly staggering amount. No wonder the body replaces the entire lining every 3 days (on average).
